I have spent the last four years building the structure and learning environment of a new small technical school in New York City to service failing inner city students. This task has led to a deep understanding of using a technical career, the culinary industry, to motivate and inspire student learning for achieving New York state standards and being prepared for a professional career. My goal is to employ the teaching skills that I have mastered and become a tutor for struggling Math students in the city.
Through my work at Food and Finance High School, I have prepared students of all levels to pass state standardized regents exams while inspiring them to appreciate the logic and concepts of Integrated Algebra, Geometry, and MathB/Trigonometry. I have dominated this job despite teaching in large class sizes with inclusion students that range from NCLB, self-contained, special education, and English language learners. This task has led to a deep understanding of differentiated instruction and how to apply it. I developed a finance curriculum and honors Trigonometry/Statistics curriculum for the purpose of educating inner city students with real life critical thinking skills. From this experience I gained a logical sense of how to apply my advanced background in mathematics to economic and business models that coincide with the culinary skills students are developing for a professional career, while still maintaining a high pass rate on State Regent Exams. I am a very strong communicator, and have been able to successfully pass on math concepts in a diverse classroom setting where English is not the first language for many of the students. These strengths would help me to connect with your child quickly to establish a positive Mathematical mindset and learning relationship.
I hope to develop a tutoring relationship with your child soon, the regents exams will be here faster than you think. It’s never too early to start preparing for them. In the meantime, should you require further information, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Michael Godwin
