If there is anyone that cares more about the kids than corporate America, then Maine Prince is the one person that is doing what he can to help the youth achieve their full potential in their chosen field. Yes, kids need to focus on getting a job, having a career, staying healthy, and getting an education.....................................but..................................if you chose to play a sport in high school for the past 4 years or 3 years or you just started playing then as a student-athlete you have made your decision that you want to be a part of something extra curricular. It just so happens that your extracurricular activity is a sport that could actually help you get to the next level to pursue your education in college.
The problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Philadelphia School District has 4 people on staff to manage 12, 000 student-athletes in 87 high schools playing 17 different sports. Typically each school has one guidance counselor for every 300 students in the school. If youre reading this, do you think its fair to have 5 guidance counselors for 1500 students in a school and handle the peronsal problems, safety, discipline, and then try to deal with helping kids get into college Of those of you reading this message, have you ever looked for a job Have you ever been laid off When you looked for a job, you looked through the newspaper, now on the internet, and of course looked for referrals from friends. Why is it that counselors only spend 15 minutes per student to help them get into college, which is like having a job. Why is it that coaches dont allow outsiders (non-staff) help improve their program to help the kids What ever the answer is...Philadelphia has a 34% graduation rate. Yes, one out of 3 kids will graduate high school. But as student-athletes, only 46% of them graduate high school, but fail to goto college. If you think that the problem is going to fix itself by 2014 - then you must know something that no one knows over the past 17 years resaerching the problems with innercity schools.
