Playing music and working with people are two of my greatest joys in life; I therefore find teaching music incredibly rewarding! I have been teaching four years out of my own studio, and have substituted at Seattles Paul Green School of Rock Music and currently teach in local schools through Music Lessons on Wheels. My approach to piano instruction is unique and multidisciplinary, informed and inspired by a mentorship model, faith, and my work with marginalized populations. I have been teaching innovative, challenging, and fun lessons in piano, keyboards, and voice, to beginner and intermediate students of all ages and backgrounds for the past four years. My vision as a musician and an educator is to utilize music’s capabilities for the greatest possible good and to help build a solid foundation today for the musicians of tomorrow.
I grew up playing piano, competing, winning awards, and performing at the age of five. After studying rigorous classical lessons for ten years, I yearned to learn music that fostered more creativity, experimentation, and self-expression. In college, I began playing keyboard with a band and performing weekly. After graduating with my BA in Psychology, I resumed formal training through post-graduate studies in music at Calvin College and jazz studies with Wayne Horvitz and Dr. Robin Connell (Interlochen Center for the Arts faculty and former instructor of Norah Jones). I have performed in a wide variety of settings, including indie rock concerts, coffee shops, church performances, numerous classical recitals, a solo, private piano recital in Seattles renowned Benaroya Hall, and a Gospel choir concert with Grammy award winning artist, Marvin Winans. In addition, my music business experience is extensive. Having managed a non-profit music and arts venue for two years and managed, booked, and promoted concerts for various venues in Seattle and beyond, I have worked with artists like Nickelcreek, Switchfoot, Explosions in the Sky, Regina Spektor, Matt Kearny, Matt Slocum of Sixpence None the Richer, Eisley, Laura Gibson, Tyrone Wells, Joy Williams, and many more. The wealth of musical genres and performances I have had the privilege to experience and perform in enriches my musicianship and approach to teaching.
I am interested in teaching a wide variety of populations, and specialize in working with anyone wanting to improve their lives through learning music. My lessons are also available for visually impaired students, foster children/youth, youth with emotional/behavior problems, and cross-cultural children/youth. My general rate is $40/45 minute lesson, although I can negotiate other arrangements in the case of financial hardship or a student only wanting a 30 minute or one hour lesson. Please contact me at the email address above and I will get back to you shortly. I look forward to hearing from you!
