So, let me start off by saying that until today, I always thought of bike theft as something that wouldnt happen to me. I ride a fixed gear conversion from a Bottechia that my father bought almost 40 years ago. I kept the front brake, the headset, handlebars and stem. in addition to the frame and fork. Keep in mind this thing was WORTHLESS.
Anyway, I lock my bike outside my school almost everyday with a U-Lock through the front wheel and the frame. the rear wheel is bolted on, the causal thief probably wouldnt be carrying an adjustable wrench on them. or maybe not. I didnt think that anything on my bike that wasnt locked up was worth stealing. Apprently there is either a market for flop-n-chopped handlebars w/ quill stems, or this thief thought s/he had stumbled upon some previously unknown type of handlebar and thought it might sell well on ebay. I dont really care either way.
I walked out of my building at around 5:15 only to find that my handlebars and stem were GONE. Some jerkoff had taken the time to not only loosen the binder bolt on the stem, but also take off the lock-ring for the headset, remove the locking nut on my brake yolk and lift my handlebars and stem clean off my bike without a second thought. These are all different sized nuts!! they must have come prepared to take my shitty parts. What was the point all it does is inconvenience me, and the parts are pretty much useless for anyone else, unless they just go shopping on the streets to build a junk bike. Bastard.
The worst thing about it is that there were 5-10 other bikes locked with 50 feet of mine. Some of these bikes were locked A LOT worse than mine was and the thief would have been able to go home with quite a few wheels and other NICER handlebars. This leads to wonder whether one of my asshole friends is playing some sort of joke on me, or if the thief has been targetting my bike specifically. Either way, if I ever catch the scum that did this, there will be hell to pay. Ill keep my eye out for flop-n-chopped aluminum handlebars with light blue tape and front brake hood. I would watch out if i were them. Cause you wont know its me when i come after you, but ill certainly know its you.
I hope I find you while youre riding your bike with its new handlebars so I can shove you under some unsuspecting taxi cab. ASSHOLE.
thank you for this rant.
