Laboratory Specialist/Advisor Position
DB is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the Laboratory Specialist/Advisor position within the CDC, Influenza Division, Atlanta, GA and international sites. Extensive travel will be required to conduct laboratory assessments. CDC will work with its Cooperative Agreement countries, WPRO and other WHO Offices to determine the countries of assignment. Minimum education/Experience or Equivalent: Graduate level training in virology and/or microbiology is required. Graduate level training in public health is preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The contractor, as an independent organization and not an agent of the Government shall furnish all labor, travel and other costs, if required, to provide on and off-site technical assistance, consultation, and operation management support to carry out laboratory assessment and technical assistance for the Influenza Division, Office of the Director and the four Branches of the Division. The tasks will be:
•Conduct hands on laboratory assessments coupled with technical assistance in Influenza Division grantee countries in order to enhance global capacity to detect and respond to influenza viruses of public health concern;
•Conduct laboratory assessments and hands-on technical training on influenza virology for Ministries of Health in collaboration with needs indentified by WHO;
•Provide written reports of laboratory assessment conducted and training delivered;
•Provide technical advice, consultation and training for MOH laboratories influenza virology and surveillance methods including but not limited to PCR, virus isolation and sequencing;
•Provide hands on BSL3+ training for countries identified jointly by CDC and WHO;
•Provide technical advice and counsel to the Influenza Division on the development and distribution of public health materials relating to seasonal, avian, and swine influenza;
•Provide technical advice and counsel to the Influenza Division on the development and distribution of technical guidelines in the areas of influenza virology and biosafety;
•Provide logistics support and technical advice to Ministries of Health of WHO countries during outbreaks and enhance general surveillance for seasonal, avian, and swine influenza viruses;
•Facilitate communication and information sharing during influenza outbreaks between WHO and USCDC;
•Provide onsite technical consultations and information for the Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) in Manila on a schedule agreed upon between CDC and WPRO. Provide continuous support and follow up via e-mail and phone when not onsite;
•Organize large and small international laboratory trainings. This includes agenda development, logistics support, communication with participants, solicitation of additional trainers in collaboration with CDC and WHO and communications with host laboratories or training facilities.
•Travel will be to 6 international trips for three (3) weeks intervals to conduct laboratory assessments. The countries will be: Laos; Manila, Philippines; Jakarta, Indonesia; Papua New Guinea; Fiji Islands; and Phnom Penh, Cambodia. These countries are in need of immediate laboratory technical assistance.
