Responsibilities:
The Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for coordinating operations of the teaching and shared laboratory facilities of the Marine Science Center. In addition, s/he will implement laboratory and chemical safety protocols; maintain manuals and procedures for facilities and equipment use; purchase, maintain and inventory scientific, audiovisual, computer and facilities equipment and associated documentation, and collect and maintain laboratory specimen stocks and protocols.
Examples of main job duties include:
- Set up/organize classrooms, teaching labs, computer labs, shared instrumentation labs, aquarium rooms, and associated equipment. Maintain protocols and manuals for use of facilities and equipment. Maintain schedules for equipment and space use.
- Maintain Computers, Networks and Software at MSC.
- Purchase, inventory and maintain laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Supervise collection, care and feeding of organisms.
- Assist with Outreach Program and their use of MSC facilities. Coordinate use of facilities for other activities (e.g., weekly seminars, Riser Lecture, special events).
- Chemical Hygiene and Safety Officer. Prepare, and update procedural manuals dealing with scientific equipment, and lab safety. Oversee safety training of COOP, work-study and visiting scientists.
Position may require outdoor fieldwork on the ocean and shore for specimen collection and skills operating small boats, power tools, and other laboratory instrumentation. Occasional after business hours work required.
Qualifications:
Masters degree in Biology or related field with strong marine biology component. 3 - 5 years laboratory experience including, purchasing, inventory control, shipping/receiving, maintenance, training, scheduling and laboratory safety. Proficiency in Macintosh and PC computer systems and networks, experience with small boat operations.
