Hakalau Field Technician Position

Job Description:

This particular job entails the foliar spraying of herbicide (Garlon 3A)Some PPE will be provided (glasses and gloves). The primary target species will be the Florida blackberry and the English Holly. Each target species has a different active ingredient and treatment concentration. Each morning a batch of herbicide will be mixed to a 0.5% concentration for the entirety of the work day (for blackberry). Each crew member will be equipped with a four gallon backpack sprayer which may require refilling; up to six times per day. The average hiking distance traveled in a day is approximately four miles. The terrain at Hakalau is very uneven; composed of thick underbrush with decaying logs throughout the surface vegetation. Crew members will be hiking line transects at a specific distance apart from one another for the majority of the day. Everyone will be equipped with a walkie-talkie for ease of contact.
Located just below Mauna Kea, Hakalau can get very cold. At night the temperature can plummet between 30-55 degrees Fahrenheit. Throughout the day, the average temperature ranges from 60-75 degrees Fahrenheit. The BRD (Biological Resource Discipline) cabin can house six individuals with its two separate rooms. The cabin is equipped with a stove/oven, sink, hot water, shower, electricity, refrigerator, and 6 beds (bunk bed style). The compost toilet is located behind the cabin.
Pono Pacific employees will start their accent to Hakalau Wildlife Refuge every Sunday afternoon. The work week runs from Monday through Thursday (4 day work week). The designated meeting location for departure to and from Hakalau Wildlife Refuge will be at the Hakalau Wildlife Complex located at 60 Newelo St, Hilo.

Highlights:

It is encouraged that individuals can hike up to four miles carrying a 40 pound pack through thick underbrush and uneven terrain.
