TITLE: BIOLOGICAL TECHNICIAN
Ocean Associates Inc. (OAI) is seeking Biological Technicians (4) to support the NOAA/National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC), Fisheries Monitoring and Socioeconomics Division, in Honolulu, Hawaii. The four positions will be located one each on the islands of Oahu, Hawaii, Maui and Kauai.
OAI conducts research, offers policy advice, and provides personnel to government and industry clients for marine fisheries and protected resources. We are under contract to provide support services to NMFS/PIFSC. Funding for the positions advertised is approved and an early start date is desired.
Each incumbent selected will provide data collection services to assist PIFSC by conducting dock-side surveys to collect census data for charter boat trips at harbors in Hawaii, Maui, Oahu and Kauai..
Specific duties and responsibilities include:
Collect boat trip information (including boat name, boat number, activity, depart/return time) at a designated harbor in each of the four major islands.
Compile the records necessary to support the project;
Provide the data collected to project leader on a weekly basis; and
Participate as necessary in meetings or training activities concerning projects assigned.
The survey is designed in two phases, with 8 hours of training provided before phase 1:
Phase 1: 31 consecutive survey days on each of the 4 islands. Survey is scheduled to be completed in a single calendar month (ie November).
Phase 2: Clean up and followup survey work for approximately 3 weeks on an intermittent basis over a 3 month period. Scheduling to be provided after completion of phase 1 survey work.
Background requirements are:
High School graduate with two (2) years of college level education, including courses in the biological or scientific field, plus six (6) months experience in a related field or a combination of such totaling 2 1/2 years combined college education/experience.
Knowledge of local small boat and charter boat fishery.
Valid driver’s license to get to the work site (a charter fishing harbor).
Flexible schedule to meet timing requirements of the project.
Place of Performance: A harbor in each island (Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, and Kauai) where charter boat fishing is active.
The salary is $16.00/hr. Benefits package included. Health benefits not included due to the short term and intermittent nature of the project.
