Position Description
Candidate will:
Verify the accuracy of samples processed by the Polish Plankton Sorting and Identification Center. This includes vials from plankton samples collected in the eastern Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska. Samples will be examined under a dissecting microscope to determine the accuracy of the identifications and counts supplied. Discrepancies will be noted.
Vial #1 from each sample contains sorted individuals from Neocalanus flemingeri and N. plumchrus stages C3 C6, unidentified Neocalanus spp. C3 C6 and C2 stages. Will examine (under the microscope) the material contained in these vials and will: 1) verify that the identifications to each species are correct, and 2) attempt to assign the unidentified individuals to a species, whenever possible. Corrections will be recorded.
Vial #5 contains unidentified Calanids C1 to C3. Will examine (under the microscope) all material contained in Vial #5. Will: 1) verify that the counts of the C1 copepodite stages agree with the counts and 2) determine if the individual specimens (C2 & C3) are sufficiently intact and distinct enough to assign them to another more specific taxonomic category (Calanus marshallae, Neocalanus cristatus, Neocalanus spp. N. flemingeri or N. plumchrus). Corrections will be recorded.
Required Skills
2 years laboratory experience identifying Neocalanus flemingeri, N. plumchrus, and Calanids. Must complete the environmental and chemical safety training within the first week of reporting to the laboratory.
Education
BS in Biology, Fisheries Science, Microbiology, Molecular biology, related field, or equivalent.
