I run a small graphic design firm in Latham NY and am looking for a designer with some experience and an understanding of good design principles to work on various projects as needed. This is currently not a full time position, but it may turn into one in the future. At this time, I plan to assign you projects as the need comes up. You will work from your own home or office, and we will try to handle most communication via email and phone. I do want someone based locally, in Latham NY or surrounding area, so that when the need arises, you can come to our office to go over project details, and review designs. This would probably only be needed once every few days.
Projects will predominantly involve the design of printed materials from business cards, logo designs, brochures, catalogs, etc. Our clients vary from small store owners looking for a logo and business cards, to larger manufacturers looking to revamp their corporate identity, entire product line packaging, and their print and online collateral. Initially you will work mostly with smaller projects, such as logos, business cards, flyers, etc. If your work is good, you may be given more complex designs to work on. On each project, I will try to go over what is needed, and the overall feel, look, etc. the client wants to achieve. You will then work on creating some draft layouts and email those in for review. You will then usually have a cycle of corrections, and changes until the design is to the clients approval.
In general the designs we create are for small to mid-sized businesses. The expect the designs to help them grow their businesses. Your work should be professional, and show that you have at least a basic understanding of design principles. Ideally, I am looking for someone who can understand what the goal of project is, and deliver a design that meets the clients needs. Your work should be intelligent, and show that you can achieve a design with meaning and purpose.
You will be working from your own home or office, and thus need to have a computer and software capable of handling the work and an internet connection fast enough to handle large files reliably. Most work is done using Adobe creative suite line of programs, mainly illustrator, photoshop, and indesign. You will need to be comfortable working with these programs. Good copy-writing, editing, and communication skills are a plus.
