France still face a fight on the road to the World Cup finals in South Africa after a disappointing1-1 draw in their Group Seven match with Romania in Paris on Saturday.
The former world and European champions have 14 points from seven matches, four behind group leaders Serbia. The two teams will meet in Belgrade on Wednesday, which will be likely to decide which team would emerge as the group winners and automatically qualify for South Africa.
France wasted several opportunities before captain Thierry Henry put them ahead three minutes into the second half, sending a William Gallas header into the net from close range.
The visitors drew an equalizer on 54 minutes when defender Julien Escude deflected a cross into his own goal to leave France facing the prospect of finishing second in the group, which would mean a likely playoff place.
