The best thing about green smoothies is that they cleverly disguise what might otherwise be unfavorable ingredients. Kids will love these smoothies from the first sip and may never know they are drinking their vegetables unless you choose to tell them! If you can't get your kids to eat spinach or kale in their dinner salad, you will no doubt be amazed to see them relishing these very same ingredients inside a fruit smoothie. Serving a green smoothie with dinner each night will give your kids some much needed nutrition and it will give you some peace of mind.
Our recipes were designed with kids in mind. Of course this doesn't mean that ad-ults won't love every sip...it just ensures that kids will too! These smoothies are so nutritious they can serve as a meal replacement if needed.
These recipes help ensure that your kids are getting adequate nutrition - fruits, greens, fiber, protein, and all of the nutrients their growing bodies need. They are also delicious, kid tested and approved. If you have picky eaters you will especially love how these recipes disguise those all important "dark" greens. The darker the leaves, the more nutrients the vegetable usually has. Because they are so important we have included many recipes that make use of spinach, kale, and collard greens. All the smoothies in this book incorporate fresh fruits and veggies and usually both. A couple "fruit" only bonus recipes are included as well.
What exactly is a green smoothie? It's a fruit smoothie that includes a big serving of dark green leafy vegetables.
Green smoothies are an excellent breakfast choice for many, as they provide healthy carbohydrates, along with an abundance of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and chlorophyll. Green smothies are also an excellent source of fiber.
When making green smoothies, it is best to use slightly more vegetables than fruits. In general, we strive to make our green smothies 60 percent greens and 40 percent fruits.
Our favourite greens to use in green smoothies are romaine lettuce, kale, spinach, and Swiss chard.
Our favourite fruits to use in green smothies are bananas, pears, apples, blueberries, mangos, papayas, and pineapples.
If you don't have any problems digesting fruits and vegetables, you can mix and match any combination of the vegetables and fruits listed above. If you have a sensitive digestive tract, it is best to combine only one vegetable and one fruit at a time.
Directions:
Not only are green smoothies really good for your health, they are extremely simple to make.
Put green vegetables and fruits into a good blender and add just enough water to allow the blender to bring vegetables and fruits together into a smoothie-like consistency.
For extra antioxidant power, we like to add 1-2 teaspoons of acerola cherry powder and 1-2 teaspoons of a super green food powder to our green smoothies.
Enjoy the health benefits of green smoothies.
