Dr. George O'Malley is a fictional character from the ABC television series Grey's Anatomy, portrayed by actor T.R. Knight, who was nominated Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series at the 2007 Emmy Awards. Knight portrays George since the beginning of the show. After the end of season three there were speculations that Knight may leave the show, making his character move in another hospital. The character is rumoured to depart from the show at the end of the season. The rumor may prove to be true, as the fifth season finale left a cliffhanger, leaving the audience wondering whether George would live or die.
George finally passes his intern exam, after a little difficulty from a hospital flooding. Also during this time, he seems to treat Lexie with even less respect, someone who has been harboring feelings for him since the season 4 finale. The final straw occurs when he receives his new interns and Lexie discovers he hadn't the decency to even ask to have her assigned to him. She breaks down in front of him, calling herself stupid and him, a jerk.
George tries to patch things up between them afterward, but Lexie starts to avoid him. Despite this, she finally decides to apologize and give a peace offering at the end of the night. Their friendship suffers nonetheless, in which she shuts him out of her life and doesn't tell him what's going on; even when she participates in a secret intern society. He's tried to refocus on his friendship with Izzie, afterward, when he begins to worry that something's truly wrong with her. He continues to assist her in games for the interns, and other activities, and starts to notice signs of deteriorating health. As such, George asked Izzie many times if there was something wrong with her but she remained persistent that she was alright. When Izzie eventually admitted her illness to Christina, and was admitted to the hospital, he was angry and disappointed that she chose to go to Cristina with her sickness and not himself. He even shut himself off to smashing bones when she was undergoing a procedure; however, after some encouraging words from Callie, George chose to finally support his friend. Furthermore, he exchanged harsh words with Alex while coping with the possibility of losing his friend, as well as losing her love to Alex. During her wedding with Alex, however, George walked a weak Izzie to the altar.
Also during this time, George started showing a talent for trauma surgery, a talent that eventually gained the attention of Dr. Owen Hunt. Hunt would eventually become his mentor and teacher, offering him advice and help. After an Iraq veteran comes to Seattle Grace to receive a prosthetic leg, George joins the army as a trauma surgeon, which shocks Bailey.
Callie decided to stage an intervention after his last surgery with the chief, only to find out that he never scrubbed in, the chief sending him home to his mother. As he was waiting on a corner, however, he saved a woman's life by throwing her out of the way of a bus, only to get caught underneath of it himself. He was admitted to Seattle Grace as a John Doe, unrecognizable due to disfiguration. Eventually he was able to trace the numbers "007" on Meredith's hand. She realized who he was, but apparently too late, as he was unresponsive in the operating room and is last seen with Izzie in full uniform in a heaven-like scene. The season was left still uncertain of whether or not he was alive.
