Ian Poulter:Singapore Open 2009 winner

Ian Poulter of England, right, shares a light moment with Adam Scott of Australia, left, while Liang Wen-chong, center, looks on at the Barclays Singapore Open Golf tournament which Poulter won at the Serapong Course at Sentosa, Singapore on Sunday Nov. 1, 2009.

Ian Poulter overcame a mid-round crisis to fire a one-over 72 and win the Singapore Open by one shot on Sunday.

The Briton held on to finish on a 10-under 274, one shot ahead of China's Liang Wenchong, and clinch his first European Tour win since the 2006 Madrid Open.

Australian pair Scott Hend and Adam Scott tied for third, a further shot adrift of Poulter, who sputtered midway through his final round with four bogeys, but a birdie on the 13th, capped by a 30-foot putt, put him back on track.

"I was getting angry," Poulter said "I felt I had to do something and I did, and it gave me a nice boost."

The victory earned Poulter $833,330 and moved him up 19 places to 10th in the rankings of the European Tour's Race to Dubai. The Singapore Open is co-sanctioned by the European and Asian tours.

Back in front, Poulter regained his composure and played par golf all the way through to the finish to register his eighth European Tour victory.

"I was playing fairly solid but mishit some shots," Poulter said. "I made it a little bit interesting on a string of holes yesterday and coming out today I made some mistakes on the front nine and back nine to make it too close for comfort.

"To stand on the last knowing you have to make par for the victory, I was fairly happy."

Players finished the third round and completed the fourth Sunday as the skies cleared and allowed the first full day of golf after three days of rain delays.

Liang was solid if unspectacular and tied for the lead at one stage, but his challenge faltered with a bogey on the ninth and another dropped shot on 13.

"I tried my best but lady luck eluded me," Liang, the Chinese number one, said. "I just couldn't find a birdie on the 18th hole after a poor third shot. There are no regrets, however, golf is like that."
