ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” ended its creatively rocky fifth season last night by not definitively answering the two biggest questions that have loomed over the soapy medical drama. Both Katherine Heigl, who plays Izzie, and T.R. Knight, who plays George, have been rumored to want out of the series. The emotionally manipulative season finale ended with both of them seemingly killed off and getting their wish.
Derek (Patrick Dempsey) performed a risky surgery on Izzie to remove her tumor. It left her with no short-term memory, which stressed out her new husband, Alex (Justin Chambers). But just when it appeared that she was regaining her memory and had beaten her cancer, she crashed and flat-lined. Despite her do-not-resuscitate order, her friends frantically worked to save her.
In a move that didn’t quite make sense for his character, George joined the army, which caused Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Callie (Sara Ramirez) to organize an intervention to stop him. But they would never get the chance. To her horror, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) realized that the unrecognizable John Doe patient who had jumped in front of a bus to save a stranger was, in fact, George. Since George has had very few story lines this season, his absence for most of this episode was so typical that the show was easily able to pull off this big surprise.
In the episode’s final moments, a glam Izzie and military-dressed George were shown greeting each other apparently on their way to the other side. Can the show survive the loss of two characters? Viewers will have to wait until fall to find out.
