Celebrated the Mischief Night day before Halloween, Mischief Night is when some engage in pranks. But if it were all innocent fun, that would be fine, said Chief Jeremy Abrams of the Montvale Police Department.
“The people who it’s not fun for are the victims whose houses get egged, whose homes get destroyed,” Abrams said.
In the past, some Montvale property owners have had to deal with blown-up mailboxes, chemical damage to their cars, broken house windows and destroyed and stolen Halloween decorations.
Police officials said shaving cream, eggs and toilet paper would be confiscated and, depending on the municipality, youngsters could face criminal mischief charges.
“We are stepping up patrols,” said Hillsdale Detective Sgt. Robert Francaviglia. “We are looking for anybody who is going to be defacing anybody’s property.”
River Vale has an 8 p.m. curfew, while Park Ridge, Oradell and Montvale have 9 p.m. curfews.
For towns with curfews, youngsters must be accompanied by a parent after the curfew hour.
Some towns have added entertainment and other diversions for the night. For the past 13 years, Wallington youngsters have been treated to a “Fright Night” carnival or sorts, complete with a haunted hay ride, cemeteries and face painting, said Capt. Stanley Kisala and borough recreation director David Popek, the events organizer.
