The Powerball numbers for May 27, 2009 finally had a big winner after weeks of waiting. Powerball winners had just gotten $200,000 or $1 million in the past weeks, but none had hit all six numbers in a long time. That changed in the May 27, 2009 drawing when all six Powerball numbers showed up on one winning ticket. As such, Powerball has its bigger winner of the year, while others hit just enough numbers to get substantial consolation prizes. But none of those smaller prizes were worth $232 million dollars.
The Powerball drawing for May 27, 2009 featured the numbers 5, 6, 12, 16 and 21, with the Powerball itself being 7 and the Power Play multiplier as 3. For weeks, no winner had hit all five numbers and the Powerball to get the rapidly inflating grand prize.
The Powerball jackpot was up to $222 million before the May 27 drawing, but ticket demands were so large, it got pushed up to $232 million. That is how much a lucky winner in South Dakota will get.
South Dakota is an unlikely state to host a Powerball winner. The likes of Florida, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and others are better known as big lottery states. Those states had some big winners as well, as 12 players in Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Minnesota, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Wisconsin got five out of six numbers.
Although those players will win $200,000 each, they were all one Powerball short of getting over $200 million. In the two instances of a big Powerball winner this year, none had won over $200 million individually. One big pot was split, and the other got just under $150 million by himself.
The one who did pick all the numbers in South Dakota can either get the jackpot paid out to him or her yearly for 29 years, or get an instant payout of $118 million dollars. The winner has a lot of time to figure it out.
There were reports that Florida had a big winner as well, as Florida papers reported that Allison Nash won $222 million from the Florida lottery by hitting all of the numbers. Florida is a newcomer to Powerball, so perhaps they can be allowed to hand out the big jackpot, without the South Dakota winner having to split his winnings.
Now that the May 27, 2009 drawing has finally produced a major winner, Powerball has been knocked back down to a mere $20 million jackpot. Mega Millions is now likely to be the richest lottery game for the moment, with a grand prize up to $35 million. But if lottery trends are any indication, Mega Millions will be at the $100-200 million level soon enough.
