Todd Brown, a 14-year-old boy, was shot by a fellow student, Friday, Feb. 5, 2010 at the Discovery Middle School in Madison, Ala. A ninth-grader is in extremely critical condition after being shot by another student at an Alabama middle school. Officials said 14-year-old Todd Brown was taken by ambulance to Huntsville Hospital from Discovery Middle School, where the shooting occurred Friday afternoon.
Madison Police Chief Larry Muncey said the incident appears isolated.
"My son goes to Discovery, and I have no doubt that he'll be safe at school Monday," Muncey said.
The shooting happened during a class change at 1:45 p.m. today. A school resource officer responded as soon as the gun was fired.
A family friend of Brown who asked to remain anonymous said he's a "great kid" and fun to be around.
"I can't imagine him doing anything to make somebody want to shoot him," he said.
The family friend said Brown played football at one time, but quit mid-season to focus on his academics. Brown is still listed in critical condition at Huntsville Hospital.
