Dexter Season 3 Episode 4 Dexter All in the Family
But not quite. At an early age, they witnessed the murder of their mother, and were left for days sitting in two inches of blood in a storage bin, before they were rescued by Harry the cop (James Remar).
Harry took Dexter in -- Brian went elsewhere -- and he never told his foster son about that awful buried memory.
Dexter fared pretty well growing up. Harry recognized Dexter's penchant for killing, and advised him to only kill those who deserved it -- other serial killers -- and he trained young Dexter in that pursuit.
His brother-- another buried memory -- wasn't raised with such a code. He really crossed the line at the end of last season when he almost butchered Deborah. So he had to die. And now Dexter is haunted by that decision.
"I drove away a brother who accepts me for a foster father that betrayed me," Dexter says ruefully.
Dexter made clear at the beginning of season one that he didn't have a normal conscience and that all human relationships he formed were merely a cover to avoid detection. This is tricky territory for the writers, and also for Hall, now that the show is moving beyond the blueprint drawn by author Jeff Lindsay, who created the character.
