Hi,
My name is Dan and I’m a 25-year-old professional engineer. I was born and raised in Lexington, KY and went to college for 6 years in Atlanta at Georgia Tech before getting a full time job. At the moment, I’m relocating from Marlborough, MA (near Boston) to Fullerton, CA in mid November for my stable but rotational job, leading me to seek a place to live. In light of trying to find an apartment/roommate in a city where I don’t have friends or family, I’m considering a live-in position with a nice roommate/family. In return, I would provide a variety of services such as cooking, cleaning, security, repairs, part-time childcare in the evenings/weekends, tutoring, playing, etc. In other words, I would be a temporary extension of the family, helping out around the household whenever not at work in exchange for a roof over my head.
Im aware that my situation sounds a little unusual, but in trying to pay off loans and save up for a house, I get creative about where I look for living during my temporary job assignments (this one runs from Nov 09 thru June 10). Do you happen to need some extra help around the household and have an available spare room
During my time in Massachusetts, Ive actually been renting a room in a familys house in exchange for childcare and household help - and things have been great on the whole! They have two boys, 12 and 8, who could be a handful at times but were also very friendly and funny. At first I wasnt sure about how living with another family would be (and vice versa), but in the end weve come to rely on each other, support each other when schedules get hectic, laugh together, and become friends. I was respectful of their space and their things and our open communication allowed us to handle any issues as they came up. The parents can vouch for my character, maturity, sense of humor, and general demeanor as well.
As far as childcare goes, Ive also babysat for lots of families in college and after. Admittedly, it’s intimidating to contact a family out of the blue. My employer allows me to be flexible in when I work (e.g. 9/80 schedule), so if you needed help in the afternoons, then I would just go into work earlier; or if you needed help in the mornings, then I would just work later. In other words, I’m flexible to try and make this work. Of course I’d want to speak to you on the phone first to assess if I this dynamic would be compatible with your family, but this note just represents the first step. I hope to have decided on a place to live by the third week in November.
Thanks for taking the time to listen. Please don’t hesitate to contact me for clarification. In essence, I hope to find a great family who can benefit from my experience, energy, honesty, humor, resourcefulness, and maturity. Maybe this is you
Thanks,
Dan
