Position Overview
Kidspace Children’s Museum, the premier children’s museum in Southern California, subscribes to the belief that play is the work of childhood, and that children learn best when directing their own experience. Kidspace Museum Educators work on the museum floor to ensure that all guests, young and old, have an excellent museum experience. Educators achieve this by leading activities, facilitating exploration of the museum, teaching programs, and maintaining the safety of our guests.
Upon hire, Museum Educators complete an orientation to learn about our philosophy of self-directed learning, how to respond to frequent guest inquiries, and Kidspace policies and procedures. Based on performance and availability, Educators can advance to facilitate art workshops, teach on-site programs to school groups, process transactions in the Busy Bee Learning Store and Ticket Booth, or facilitate birthday parties.
Responsibilities:
Maintain control of various stations throughout the museum by refreshing exhibit areas and responding to guestsneeds.
Facilitating programming such as art projects, story time, and science-based activities.
Enforce safety policies and emergency procedures.
Respond to any guest inquiries or concerns in a polite and courteous manner.
Have knowledge of all guest driven museum experiences, including memberships, birthdays, special events, and programs.
Perform minor cleaning duties throughout the day to maintain the look of the museum.
Qualifications:
Dynamic, outgoing, and energetic personality.
An interest in working with young children in an informal educational setting.
Some experience teaching or tutoring in the creative or performing arts, sciences, and/or humanities to children ages 1-9.
A minimum availability of 20 hours per week, including one weekend day, and occasional holidays and evenings. (Hours are not guaranteed).
Must have basic problem solving skills, ability to resolve guest conflicts, be reliable, have an outgoing attitude and friendly helpful nature.
Must be able to tolerate exposure to outdoor elements, stand for long periods of time and have agility to climb up towers and through tunnels.
Uniforms are required (shirts and jackets are provided).
Salary
During an initial probationary period of at least 80 hours, Educators are paid $8/hour. Based on performance and availability, there are opportunities for advancement with accompanying hourly rate increases. This is a part-time non-exempt position. No other benefits are offered.
