Everyones trying to save money these days. And doing your own divorce can seem like a good idea. The Family Court has tried to make it easier, by putting the forms online, and staffing an information kiosk at the Court House. But its still a time-consuming, complicated process. Im an attorney who handles nothing but uncontested divorces, and I can take care of the entire process quickly and correctly. My fee for an uncontested divorce (with no children or property), is $399 (plus $18.75 excise tax) The only costs are the filing fee to the State of Hawaii of $175, and $10 for postage and photocopies. "Uncontested" means both parties agree and are willing to cooperate and sign all the necessary papers to complete the divorce. No court appearance is required by either party.
If there are children or real property, and both parties are in agreement, ethically I can only represent one party, but I can prepare the necessary documents regarding custody arrangements, how real estate will be divided, etc.. In such cases, I generally charge an additional $100-$200, depending on the issues involved, but there are no other hidden costs.
