Your boyfriend is socially inept. The problem is he doesnt know what to say so he says nothing.

So you gotta ask him directly why he doesnt talk while eating. (This is part of a relationship -- being open and honest.)

Tell him to be upfront and honest with you. He needs some prodding at the dinner table.

If he makes a social gaffe then dont ridicule (which is probably what has happened in the past). Pretend you dont notice and continue the conversation.

Also, talk about things you know he understands whether it be tools, racing, sports, etc.

If he still doesnt open up then you should probably move on.
