Whats the rebuttal to "there are no atheists in foxholes" There is no logical rebuttal to this claim. Why Because its not an argument. "There are no atheists in foxholes" is an assertion. Its like saying "X is equal to 6.78". Its either true or it isnt.
Of course, the atheist-in-foxholes phrase is irrelevant to the question of whether a god exists or not. If there are atheists in foxholes, a theist could argue that its just an example of divinely-created free will. On the other hand, simply beliving in something doesnt make it true.
Specifically, "either there is no God, or Hes a bastard".
Andrew Cline - in his blog "About.com Guide to Atheism since 1998" - received a letter from a US Marine who said: "Not that this would be admitted or last after combat is over, but even the marines praying every night when we were in the rear werent pleading for gods help in combat. They were acting just like atheists, ducking and covering, shooting back; trying to save themselves. Never once did I see someone stop and pray for help. They use religion to get them through day to day, but when it hits the fan so to speak, they dont take chances relying on god."

I’m in a position to know. After initially being nominated to WestPoint, I enlisted in the United States Army as a Private in 1964, where I served 21 years on active duty retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1985. As one who is not shy about proclaiming my firm non-belief in any supernatural nonsense, religious or otherwise, I became aware of literally thousands of fellow Atheists in uniform all over the world. Some were overt and public about their beliefs. Some were not. But all were willing to lay down their lives if necessary. Many did.

This is, of course, not real Faith and does not make god real.
If a situation is literally out of your control, it should not be surprising that you would try everything you can think of to gain control, including the absurd. But resorting to the absurd in an act of desperation is far from true religious Faith.
