I think the problem is that Americans (especially Phoenix) do not appreciate the global problems and issues that U2 tries to address in their music. There was a time that America recognized them as a great band but then it was purely that the song(s) were just that good. Americans didnt connect with the issues addressed by the music but liked the music.
Now if they were making music directed at the problems faced by America it would be totally different. In America we never had those type of problems, we were the ones trying to help fix them. We are so sick of trying to help other nations of the world, we are constantly bombarded with pleas to help feed the hungry, heal the sick, fight for freedom. We are sick of it. We can only do that so many years before individually we think why am I still trying to help them. During my lifetime our nation has given help to so many other countries to see those countries still in dire straights today.
Even the charities within the US have been milking this cow, raking in billions (and trillions) of dollars. Individually we do not want to send money (if we even had any) to other countries. We are already through our tax dollars. We support all the charities with our tax dollars (this includes churches) because none of these organizations have to pay taxes like the rest of us. We see all the wealthy people drawing a healthy paycheck overseeing the charities. We are tapped out. Write some music that deals with our issues here in America and Im sure a band that does that would become wildly popular.
