Your cover letter. You know, most hiring and
HR managers don’t want to read your resume
any more than you want to spend your
weekend or evenings writing one.
I used to be the hiring manager for an
international agency with offices in Japan and the
USA. My staff and I hired over 70 people for various
projects, with only two weeks to fill each vacancy.
Maybe a few months, for a high-end position.
We’d open the mail and read the faxes over the waste
paper basket because we’d get hundreds of applications
for each position advertised.
We had to do this because it was impossible to call
back and interview everyone there was no time.
On top of that hiring new blood was just one of our
responsibilities. HR managers actually spend a lot
of time taking care of current employees: retirement
plans, health insurance, COBRA, maternity leave,
training, meetings. You name it, they do it.

With everything being electronic today, the hiring
