Large dead tree removal near home: http://www.youtube.com/watchv=_dSYCD4k1ws .
There are more options for trees than full removals to make trees on your property safer.
DEADWOOD REMOVAL AND CANOPY CLEANING reduces the weight of trees, thereby reducing their chance of failure.
CROWN REDUCTION PRUNING, likewise. This if not topping.
DO NOT TOP your trees. Not only is it very, very bad for them, its a waste of money, and likely to make them more dangerous over time. Topped trees grow back very quickly.
BRACE AND CABLE SUPPLEMENTAL SUPPORT SYSTEMS like non-invasive Cobra can assist the tree by reducing the movement of suspect/ weak crotches, while still allowing the tree to move, thereby strenthening itself, unlike steel cables that are installed by drilling into the living stems and through-bolting.

CONSTRUCTION PROTECTION PLANS can save you money down the road. Doesnt it make sense to have a professional evaluate your building site, select those trees that will become damaged, protect those that can be saved, and have safer, cheaper result in the end.
Think about whether it makes sense to damage the sensitive root system of trees right where you are spending a lot of money to build a new building. This endangers the building and occupants potentially because there is an increased likelihood of tree failure. Then, should the tree decline or fail, youve got important things to protect under the removal, necessitating more rigging and ropework, or even potentially the cost of crane work, which we do perform.
Tree roots extend out beyond the canopy. Soil and root compaction, mechanical damage from excavating, the all too frequent bump on the trunk by heavy equipment, concrete or paint wash-out areas, etc are all things that can be mitigated by having a specified plan with your builders.

Of course there are times for REMOVALS. Dead, declining, diseased, damaged, overcrowded stands, construction, more sunlight, wrong tree for the location, etc. We remove trees of all sizes. Our most recent large climbing removal was a 145 Douglas-fir between two powerlines. It was damaged by excavation.
Rather than a complete removal, consider leaving a WILDLIFE HABITAT SNAG, which are few and far between in the urban forest.
Your trees can be MILLED into lumber and graded to be used in your construction. The above mentioned Doug-fir was milled into lots of beautiful lumber, of much higher quality than youll typically find at lumber yards.
STUMP GRINDING finishes a removal and prepared for replanting.
WE PLANT TREES, properly, helping to avoid long-term problems and expenses.

ASK YOURSELF IF YOU KNOW THE ANSWERS TO THESE IMPORTANT TREE QUESTIONS. ASK THE TREE SERVICE THAT IS BIDDING ON YOUR TREE CARE.
Why let someone untrained "care" for your trees Once trees are damaged, there is no way to repair the damage.
Did you know that trees NEVER HEAL
Did you know that tree growth is hormonally controlled Apical Dominance, whats that mean
What is included bark anyway
What does it mean that a tree is a long-lived, woody, perennial, that is highly compartmentalized, and compartmentalizes decay organisms.
What are the better, and lesser, times of the year for pruning on which trees
Is it okay to climb trees with spikes for pruning
Why should you NOT use pruning "sealant". What is it made from
How much is the right amount to prune From where
Why shouldnt I top my tree Itll make it safer, wont it
What is a "cable" or "supplemental support system"
What can be done to make my tree safer
Whats wrong with a "little haircut" all over
I can drive/ park my car right next to the tree because the taproots go straight down, dont they
What do you mean I cant put a foot of soil on top of my tree roots so my yard is level
Wait, grass competes against the tree Why should I mulch around my tree, but not up against the trunk
Weed and Feed is good for the tree, right
Branch Collar Branch Bark Ridge Three Point Cut Flush Cut Stub Cut
Reaction wood Root Crown Co-dominant Leaders
Whats wrong with chopping whatever I can reach with my polesaw and ladder
The excavator wasnt close to the tree, at least three to four feet away from the trunk. Thats okay, right
What do you mean that windsail reduction is a fallacy
What effects will excavation and construction have on the remaining trees
I thought trees take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. What do you mean that roots use oxygen
All fungi (plural of fungus) is bad for a tree, right
Those mushrooms on the lawn and trunk dont mean anything, do they
If I need to shorten/ reduce a limb, how do I go about it
What are the most important things that I can do/avoid doing to take care of my trees myself

We offer FREE ESTIMATES when you know what you want (e.g. 10 canopy raise, removal and grind, building clearance pruning, canopy cleaning, cable installation).
ARBORIST CONSULTATIONS available by fee (What is wrong with my tree, What can I do to promote the health and longevity of my trees, Does my tree have a disease and what can be done about it, Is my tree dangerous and should I remove it).
You may ask why we charge for an Arborist Consultation when others will give their opinions during a "free estimate".
Let me give you two good examples. When a friend took her car in for some tires and a "free inspection" she was told that she needed new front struts in her suspension to make her care safe. Her response, "You guys must put sell some pretty *&^%$# struts, since you replace those very ones last year. That was with her bringing her vehicle to their location at her expense. They still tried to sell her clearly unnecessary work.
Now since you arent bringing your trees to a tree service at your expense, but rather tree services are driving their rig across town to inspect your trees, spending time and money, it is disadvantageous to say, "Really your tree is fine. You really dont need to hire us to do anything."
Recently, I went to look at a "big pine tree that we think needs to come down because its leaning, and we want an estimate for removal. We just bought the house and were worried about it falling on the neighbor."
Removal of that tree in the backyard with no truck access would have been around $1200. In five minutes of looking at the trunk, root area, and canopy of the tree, I assessed that the tree grew at an angle because it had a neighboring tree that was removed and the stump ground before they bought the house. Instead of bidding $1200 to remove a healthy tree, we are going to prune it, and four others for $300, plus good advice on keeping all their trees healthy. Had they called a tree removal service, or hired someone random person with no license or insurance "cheap on Craigslist", where would they be Needlessly spending a bunch of money, devalued property, lack of summer shade for their house (think about the electric bill), and still having widowmakers and limbs just about rubbing their roof. Seems like a worthwhile Arborist Consultation to me.
You get what you pay for.
